Let's talk heavy bleeding!

Aug 15, 2019

Let's talk heavy bleeding!

If talking about periods makes you uneasy, well, this blog isn't for you.

Let's talk truth with Dr. Taryn!

Don't let anyone tell you that you must just accept that you have an illness and learn to live with it.

Ladies- let’s talk about heavy bleeding!

This statistic really spoke to me- 1 in 20 women consult their primary care physician every year about this problem! Menorrhagia is the medical term defined as abnormally heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding. This is most often due to anovulatory cycles. The anovulatory cycle is a menstrual cycle with the absence of ovulation. This means, without ovulation, there is no chance of becoming pregnant. From collected research, adolescent girls and women nearing menopause are at greatest risk for menorrhagia. BUT- that is not always the case.

Here are some of the primary causes of heavy bleeding:

  • Can be caused by excessive overbuilding of the uterine lining
  • Ovarian dysfunction (not ovulating)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine polyps due to elevated hormone levels
  • Adenomyosis (endometrial glands become embedded in uterine muscle)
  • IUD use
  • Pregnancy complications

With heavy, unusual periods some complications can include:
– Iron deficiency anemia
– Severe menstrual cramps or abdominal pain

Here are some of the primary signs and symptoms of heavy bleeding:

  • Soaking through one or more tampons or pads for several consecutive hours
  • Needing to use double sanitary protection to control menstrual flow
  • Need to wake up to change menstrual pad at night
  • Bleeding for longer than one week
  • Passing large blood clots
  • Restricted activities
  • Anemia or excessive fatigue

To “help” these symptoms, the typical conventional treatments are as follows:

  • Birth control of some kind (for suppression of ovulation)
  • Uterine ablation (a procedure that surgically destroys the lining of your uterus)
  • Partial hysterectomy (removes the uterus and the cervix is left intact)

Yikes, controlling heavy menstrual bleeding by an invasive surgery that comes with a grocery list of potential complications and/or side effects or taking a synthetic hormonal supplement that comes with a grocery list of potential complications and/or side effects! How are those our typical options in 2019?! Taking birth control to symptomatically treat heavy menstruation is like putting a rug over cracked foundation to keep it from spreading. Getting to the root cause of why these symptoms are present is what needs to happen! Our women deserve better. Please contact Stittleburg Restorative Health Care to see how Functional Medicine can help resolve your heavy bleeding!

Let's get back to health,
Dr. Taryn

I have had an overwhelming amount of support and understanding throughout this pregnancy, and for that, I am sincerely thankful! I have patients, friends, and family continuing to ask me what’s going on and what’s the plan.  Let me fill you in on what I know. My daughter, Zirah, came into this world at 32 weeks by emergency cesarean. Let’s do a general vocab refresher before [...]

Every year, roughly 80% of Americans, have an artificial Christmas tree in their house. This may be something you’ve never thought twice about- until now.  I grew up taking a family trip to the Christmas tree farm, hopping on a wagon ride, all the while searching for THE PERFECT tree for my dad to cut down. We now continue this tradition with my family. Artificial trees are something I haven’t had any personal experience with, but the majorit [...]

Constipation is very common- but just because something is ‘common’ doesn’t make it “normal.” Something that is deemed “safe and effective” in constipation is laxatives. One of the most common suggested laxatives, for all age ranges, is MiraLAX.  Per MiraLAX’s website they say, “MiraLAX works with your body’s natural process to provide [...]

Magnolia Jane Kurtzhals For decades, immediate umbilical cord clamping following baby’s birth was the norm. However, the more we know, the more we learn- the more we learn, the more we change! Let’s do a vocab refresher before I dive into this- Umbilical Cord: this connects the baby to the placenta. I recently posted on my personal page asking what protein powder my friends are using. I was blown away by all of the Herbalife responses.  I just did a blog on my professional opinion of Thrive Le-Vel and received inquiries about Herbalife.  As always, I am going to start this by saying, you don’t know until you know. The point of this blog isn’t to hurt feelings or discredit a [...]

Alright, I am going to start this by saying, you don’t know until you know. The point of this blog isn’t to hurt feelings or discredit anyone. I simply feel obligated to share my professional doctor opinion on another green washed* brand- one that regularly fills up my personal social media.  *Greenwashing is considered an unsubstantiated claim to deceive consumers into believing [...]

Start each day with a grateful heart. Enjoy the little things that bring you joy. This morning, I came down the steps to, Derek, washing dishes, loading dishes, and starting breakfast. Immediately I was elated. I sat down on the island finishing some emails on my phone. He finished up the dishes, washed the sink, and started making our blueberry pancakes.  In that very moment, I couldn [...]
