mom guilt
In case you haven't been told today, you're doing great!
Let's Talk Truth With Dr. Taryn
Let’s talk M҉O҉M҉G҉U҉I҉L҉T҉

To all my mamas who are reading this - you’re doing better than you think!! Being a mom in today’s day and age is hard. The constant input from social media, the picture perfect families on Insta, the judging when you finally take some “me time”, the list goes on. The choices never end.  I spent 15 minutes trying to pick out a sippy cup the other day. A SIPPY CUP! As I type this, my 10 month old is screaming “mom, mom, mom!”, my 6 year old is yelling something about not finding his socks, and I’m over here just trying to finish a lukewarm cup of coffee.

I recently had a friend tell me of an experience she had with her two boys at the dentist. Both boys decided to have meltdowns - 2 toddlers, 2 separate rooms, 1 mom. The assistant caste so much shade on the mom with sighs, rude comments, and even eye rolls, that when the mom left, she was in tears. Why? Because she felt that she was a subpar mom based solely on this one situation. It took judgement from someone with zero relation to her everyday mom life struggles to break her. That’s just one example of how much pressure we put on our moms. When, in reality, she is a kicka$$ mom! There aren’t many kiddos that like the dentist in the first place (sorry to my besties hubby who’s a dentist) and kiddos can’t ⒜⒧⒲⒜⒴⒮ behave. That’s life.
present at home
First and foremost, you have to find time for yourself before you worry about anyone else. How can you take care of tiny humans if you aren’t taking care of yourself? Well I’m here to tell you, it is a simple idea that can change this constant mindset, it’s just not an easy task to accomplish. It starts with self-love and self-revelation! You are enough.

Secondly, slow down! There will never be 25 hours in a day. You can’t do every single thing, for every single child, every single day! If you couldn’t get to the dishes, there’s always tomorrow. Laundry didn’t get folded? Big deal, at least it’s washed. Did your kids go to bed happy, healthy, and feeling loved? Then you won the day, mama.
Thirdly, remove anything and everything that doesn’t bring you positivity and peace. Do you have a “friend” that constantly brings negative energy into your life? Make some distance. Do you have a family member that tells you how you should be raising your children? Respectfully, put your foot down. YOU are the mom, YOU birthed (or adopted) the child, YOU (along with the father) make the decisions.

Lastly, are you struggling with always feeling tired? Constant anxiety or feeling down? Snapping at your significant other or your kids because of irritability and mood swings? These feelings are ⓃⓄⓉ normal and they are due to hormonal imbalances.  The good thing is that they can be treated naturally from the comfort of your own home! Please contact Stittleburg Restorative Health Care to see how we can help you get back to pre-children health!  Motherhood has taught me the meaning of living in the moment and being at peace. Children don’t think about yesterday, and they don’t think about tomorrow. They just exist in the moment.

Let's talk about sugar!

Just because you are not sick,
doesn’t mean you are healthy.

Let’s Talk Truth with Dr. Taryn
Let’s talk about sugar! Are you constantly craving sugar? Sugar has been shown to be as addictive as cocaine. Think about that! Something that is legal and readily accessible can be as addictive as an illegal street drug. That’s scary. Aside from smoking, the biggest culprit in today's heart attack pandemic is high blood sugar. It leads to a condition known as insulin resistance or early Type-II diabetes.

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat. Insulin has two roles: 1. To lower blood sugar and 2. To store calories in the form of fat. Insulin resistance is the perfect set up for sugar addiction.

Here’s some science for all my biology loving folks:
  • High blood sugar elevates insulin and leptin resulting in never feeling full.
  • High levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) increase your urge for comfort foods.
  • High cortisol during sleep increased ghrelin (the always hungry hormone).

You may be sitting here, thinking of grabbing a Diet Coke next time instead of a Coke to “remove” the sugar. Problem solved, right? WRONG! Diet pop (also referred to as Soda for all you non-Wisconsinites) wreak havoc on your metabolism and will ultimately cause you to gain weight. Why is that? First, the sweet taste from Diet Coke elicits an insulin spike, which blocks your ability to burn fat. Second, artificial sweeteners found in Diet Coke disrupt satiety, the feeling of being full.

I’m going to share with you a few of the, as I like to call them, “Worst Drinks in America”.

SoBe Green Tea (1 bottle, 20 fl oz)
240 calories
0 g fat
61 g sugars
Sugar Equivalent:
4 slices Sara Lee Cherry Pie
Picture
Picture
Starbucks Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha
With Whipped Cream (venti, 20 fl oz)
660 calories
22 g fat (15 g saturated)
95 g sugars
Sugar Equivalent:
8½ scoops Edy’s Slow Churned Ice Cream
McDonald’s Triple Thick Chocolate Shake
(large, 32 fl oz)
1,160 calories
27 g fat (16 g saturated, 2 g trans)
168 g sugars
Sugar Equivalent:
13 McDonald’s Baked Hot Apple Pies

Fun fact --> Did you know, interval training can lower blood sugar by up to 40%. To put it into perspective, the commonly prescribed Metformin does so by a paltry 19% while putting users at risk of obesity, if they can tolerate the constant vomiting and diarrhea! (WOW!)

Controlling blood sugar has become the absolute hottest area of research and that research continues to point to Functional Medicine! Not only does it suggest a way of ameliorating heart disease, but also a host of other diseases caused by high blood sugar. These include but are not limited to diabetes, cancer, and even Alzheimer's!

Don't let anyone tell you that you must just accept that you have an illness and learn to live with it. Please contact Stittleburg Restorative Health Care for information about how we can help you!
